Frequently Asked Questions
+What does SPF stand for?
SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. It is a multiplier of how long you can stay out in the sun without protection before you start burning. For example: If you can normally stay out for 10 minutes (without protection), before you start to get burned, then an SPF 35 should enable you to stay in the sun for 350 minutes (nearly 6 hours) before you start to burn.
+Why don’t you sell a product with an SPF
higher than 35?
In the past we have considered formulating a Sunscreen with a higher SPF. However, recently the FDA has been discussing limiting the claims that a company can make about SPF to only a 30 or 35. The reason for this is that once you get to about an SPF 35, a higher SPF will have an almost insignificant marginal increase in percent of the sun’s rays blocked. This, coupled with the fact that a higher SPF would require many more unnecessary chemicals added to the formula to reach this higher SPF rating, has led us to the decision to continue making only an SPF of 35 and 15, at least for now.
+Your product claims to be Broad Spectrum, what
does that mean?
The term Broad Spectrum means that our sun block protects from not only UVB rays but also protects well into the UVA spectrum. It does not refer to UVC rays since UVC rays do not make it through our atmosphere.
+Can any Sunscreen protect against 100%
of the sun’s rays?
No, most products provide between 90-96% protection depending on the SPF. The unique thing about Solar Defense is that the SPF does not degrade with time, unlike similar products.
+Your product says that it is a water-based lotion, how can it be water-based and water resistant at the same time?
Yes our products are water-based, which means that we do not rely on oils to compose our Sunscreen. It is our unique formulation process that allows our product to completely bond to your skin in only a few minutes and to stay bonded all day.
+I’ve heard that some products are not water resistant even though they claim to be, is your product actually water resistant?
There are actually two water resistant classification claims allowed by FDA, water resistant for 40 minutes or extremely water resistant for 80 minutes. Solar Defense is classified as extremely water resistant for 80 minutes. Unfortunately, even though a sunscreen may stay on for hours, the FDA does not allow claims of longer than 80 minutes nor do they require them to maintain their claimed SPF for more than the claimed amount of time. This means that while you may still have sunscreen on after several hours in water, it may not maintain the SPF that the label claims. In other words, your SPF 30 may become only an SPF 20, or even less. Consequently, we believe that a product which claims to be SPF 35 and water resistant should live up to both claims. To prove the efficacy of Solar Defense, we took our product to an independent lab and had the SPF tested on two different subjects. The results showed Solar Defense to be an SPF of 35.83 even after 80 minutes in water.
+I have sensitive skin, will your product work for me?
Our product does not contain any oils or PABA and is Hypo-allergenic, making it perfect for people with easily irritated skin. Our product is recommended by dermatologists and doctors, and we also have several customers who are able to use our product despite skin diseases such as Lupus.
+Do I need to reapply throughout the day?
With most Sunscreens you need to reapply several times throughout the day because they either don’t work as well as they claim or wash off. Although Solar Defense Sunscreen has been shown to be effective and extremely water resistant for at least 80 minutes (or more), the FDA recommends that you re-apply often or as needed and we agree. It is better to be safe than risk getting burned.
+Why don’t you use Parsol 1789?
We recently added Parsol 1789 (Avobenzone) to our products because we feel that our formula is more effective protecting against UVA exposure with it. When Parsol was first introduced, it had photo stability issues, so we chose not to use it. However, it is our understanding that those issues have been resolved.
+Do you use PABA in your products?
Approximately 10% of the population is allergic to PABA. Because of this, we have formulated all of our products to be PABA free.
+Is your product safe for children?
Yes our product is safe for children. It was previously believed that sunscreen should only be used on children older than 6 months, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation and the America Academy of Dermatology. Recently in 1999, the American Academy of Pediatrics released a statement saying that parents could now use sunscreen on infants younger than 6 months. However, here at Solar Defense, we strongly recommend keeping children who are too young to play in the sun, out of the sun. It’s the only sure thing.
+How come you don’t have a children’s
line of Sunscreen?
Our sunscreen meets all of the standards that you should look for when purchasing a Sunscreen for your children. It is water resistant, PABA free, oil free, and fragrance free, it is a broad spectrum formula, and is non greasy. This means that it will effectively protect your children without stinging their eyes or wearing off throughout the day. Currently we haven’t gone the extra step to provide a bottle with a fun label for children, however, we may design one in the future.
+How come I can’t find your product in retail stores?
We have decided to keep our product out of retail stores where it would be simply another sunscreen competing for a spot on the shelf. We prefer to sell through venues which will inform our customer of the benefits to using a Sunscreen which doesn’t just make empty claims of protection and water resistant capabilities. Instead we rely more on word of mouth and the quality of our product. The majority of our customers are repeat customers, and we would rather devote more energy to pleasing them. You may, however, be able to purchase our product at your local dermatologist’s office or pharmacy. If they don’t carry it, be sure and tell them that they should.
